Rockstar announces GTA IV release date

Posted by dave

It has been confirmed that GTA IV for the XBOX 360® and Playstation 3® will be released on April 29, 2008. If you’ve been following the GTA franchise you’d dare not miss out on their new title. Below is a quote from the Wikipedia article defining the differences from the previous titles to the new one. A very interesting read..

  • After the initial load sequence, no such occurrences persist when entering/exiting buildings or crossing islands. The extent of the no-load-time expectation in the game has also been commented on; a Rockstar spokesperson claimed, “you can basically play the game from beginning to end without a single load screen.”
  • Details revealed demonstrate how variations in the terrain cause the way the character walks to change. The way the player moves is controlled by a physics engine instead of pre-written animations, therefore enabling character movements to be more realistic. Rockstar Games announced that Euphoria by NaturalMotion would be used in future Rockstar titles in a press release that accompanied the second trailer, confirming that Euphoria would indeed be used in the game.
  • Stealing a parked car can no longer be done simply by opening the door and driving off. Now, it involves Niko approaching the car, breaking the glass, and hotwiring it; only then can he use it. There will be several animation variations to sneaking up to a car and breaking its window. The way Niko enters the car would look different each time depending where and how he is in relation to the car. Because of the NaturalMotion engine used in the game, the way the character will approach the car will be completely random. The trunks of cars will also be utilized by the player, though specific details are unknown. Furthermore, players will be able to choose from four different camera views while in a car.
  • Police artificial intelligence and star wanted levels now operate differently. When the police are in search of Niko, the player will now have to avoid a certain radius marked on the map in which the police will be looking for him. The size of this radius will increase with the player’s wanted level (the more stars, the bigger the radius) and also re-centers itself on Niko’s location if he is spotted by the police. Instead of utilizing the “Pay N’ Spray” as in previous games, Niko has to realistically disguise himself by clandestinely changing vehicles in empty areas such as parking garages, a feature seen in the video game Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. Additionally, pedestrians can now report crimes such as carjacking.
  • Pedestrians are much more intelligent, realistic, and diverse, using mobile phones, cash machines, eating snacks, drinking soda, reading newspapers, scratching their nose, coughing, and interacting with each other through laughter and remarks. Homeless people will be seen in alleys rubbing their hands over a flaming barrel, sitting against walls, asking for spare change, and other expected actions. The flow of pedestrians and traffic will be different depending on the time of day.

Activision reveals double dose of 007

Posted by tifutu

“Activision chairman and CEO Bobby Kotick has revealed that the publisher has not one but two Bond projects currently underway.

Kotick described Bond as one of the great videogame franchises of all time, “and that really was a result of Goldeneye”

Talking further about the Bond franchise, he said previously game quality had suffered “as it wasn’t a focal point” while it was with EA. It didn’t get the attention it deserved due to the publisher having such a broad portfolio, Kotick added.

He said highest possible game quality will ultimately be what re-invigorates the Bond franchise.

No details revealed on those games just yet though…

Simpsons “Multi-Faceplate” Introduced…

Posted by tifutu

“Solutions 2 Go, a product manufacturer based in Ontario, Canada, has signed a licensing deal with 20th Century Fox to create video-game gear branded with “The Simpsons” themes. Among the products the company is releasing is an Xbox 360 “multi-faceplate,” which is different because it enables the user to choose from six themed graphics. The faceplate comprises two halves that can be separated; the user then selects which of the graphics to use, puts it between the plastic layers, snaps them together and places the faceplate onto the console in the normal manner.

As shown below, the graphics include two different versions of Bart skateboarding, Homer rappelling down the side of a building on a rope of sheets tied together and Mr. Burns being…well, Mr. Burns.”

The thumbs should be up soon guys…

Pretty innovative idea I think, I’m not really one to chop and change faceplates myself, but i must say, sporting homers fat belly on my power button sounds pretty tempting…

crysisIGN is reporting that Crysis has gone gold, expected date out is November 16th.”

Short and sweet. Don’t forget to pick up the demo if you haven’t already. Don’t forget you need shares in NASA, nVidia, Intel as well as a small part of the International Space Station to actually be able to run this one.

Another strike against Sony’s PS3?

Posted by tifutu

Blacksite: Area 51 Kotaku is reporting that Midway is struggling with the PS3 version of their soon to be released Alien/Sci-fi shooter, Blacksite: Area 51. The reported problems are apparently similar to what was seen on the PS3 version of Stranglehold.

“The PS3 version is experiencing issues and missed deadlines…Midway isn’t happy at all about the progress, and it’s a story I’ve heard over and over this year across the industry when it comes to the PS3 and cross-platform titles.”

Some are saying that the common factor here could in fact be the PS3 version of the Unreal Engine 3, but somehow I’m not so sure, I’m certain that many of you read what Gabe Newel(Half-Life 2) had to say about the PS3 in general. I can tell you one more thing, he’s not the only one bad-mouthing the PS3 at this stage, maybe based on his size he speaks a little more freely, but hey.

I just hope these sort of problems eventually get ironed out, the PS3 is an expensive console, and I’d hate to think that Sony dropped it’s prices just so that you don’t feel so bad about buying a sort of okay game.

Word has it Spore Will Wrightfully be ready in Six Months

Posted by tifutu

Spore

Good news to all you Sims (or just Spore) fans, according to Will Wright – the highly acclaimed creator of the Sims games, Spore should be ready to hit the retail shelves in about 6 months.

“Spore’s an ambitious game - which he admits - that’s essentially a life sim. Players start off as a single-cell organism and then create their species at every stage of its evolution - from its first steps on land through to tribes then a culture and then finally it’s off to explore the galaxy. ‘We’ve had to do a lot of testing to make sure that the game is accessible by a wide group of people’, Wright went on to explain. ‘I want the people who have played The Sims to be able to play Spore - I don’t want it to be something just hardcore gamers play.’”

If any of you out there have any sense at all you’ll keep this one away from your girlfriends/wives/daughters ‘cos if the Sims franchise is anything to go by, EA… need I say more!? – For the record I didn’t say that.

Just a bit of news one the side, Spore will be coming out first on the PC, but EA plans on making this an entirely new, cross platform franchise(any surprises here?). But that all console fans out there - Wii included, will have to wait a bit longer for this

Anyways, keep your eyes and ears pealed for this one, click here for some screens and follow on for some footage.

Click more to check out some in-game footage and here for some screenshots.

It was a great game on the 360, now with the detail upped thanks to dx10 and all the extra content the guys over at Epic have thrown in, it should be even better. Possibly even worth getting, even if one played it to death on the 360 already.
